What We Do
The Furnished by Friends program provides essential household furniture and goods to individuals and families transitioning out of challenging life circumstances. We believe that no one should have to come home to empty rooms, no couch to sit on, no table to eat at, and no beds to sleep in.
Through the generosity of our community donors, we collect gently used furniture, household items, and small appliances. These donations are then provided free of charge to pre-screened recipients on our waitlist.
Why We Do It
A furnished home provides more than just physical comfort. It restores dignity, creates stability, and offers hope for a fresh start. Our clients have worked hard to overcome significant challenges:
- Homelessness – Individuals and families transitioning from shelters to permanent housing
- Domestic Violence – Survivors starting over in safe, new environments
- Fire or Natural Disasters – Families who have lost everything
- Recovery Programs – Individuals rebuilding their lives after addiction or incarceration
- Veterans – Those who served our country and need support transitioning to civilian life
- Refugees and Immigrants – New arrivals building a life in our community
- Family Reunification – Families working with OYFS to bring children home
Many have exhausted their limited resources on securing housing—first month’s rent, security deposits, and utilities—leaving nothing for furniture. We help bridge this gap, ensuring they can begin their new chapter with dignity and comfort.
How It Works
For Those Who Need Help:
- Referral Process – Those in need of assistance will need to fill out a furniture request form and work with our staff for a screening in-take. For more information, please call (570) 342-1342 or email dwilson@fotpcmc.org.
- Personal Shopping Appointments – Participants will receive individual appointments at our warehouse where they can select furniture that suits their needs and personal style
- Complete Home Furnishing – We provide beds, dressers, couches, tables, chairs, kitchen items, and other essentials needed to create a functional home
- Emergency Priority System – We prioritize cases based on urgency while maintaining a waiting list for ongoing needs
We gratefully accept gently used furniture and household items in good, clean condition. Your donations directly help local families in need.
Items We Accept:
- Beds and bedroom furniture (dressers, nightstands)
- Living room furniture (couches, chairs, coffee tables)
- Dining room sets (tables and chairs)
- Kitchen items (dishes, pots, pans, small appliances)
- Linens and towels
- Cleaning products
Donation Options:
- Drop-off at our warehouse during designated hours
- Schedule a pickup for larger items
- Host a furniture drive at your workplace, church, or community group
- Make a financial contribution to help us purchase new mattresses and essential items
